This time, the aim was to understand how Malawian migrants cope with and negotiate very tough conditions in Cape Town. Steffen says, &#8216;Working with Malawian migrants takes you to the bottom of the global economy. They have arrived in their thousands to Cape Town in the past twenty years. They fall victims to incredibly tough conditions of violence, extortion from landlords and criminals, exploitation from employers. To survive is hard.&#8217; Steffen goes on, &#8216;In one conversation with one migrant, Hudson, he told me how you deal with hunger and the stress that comes from not having eaten and not knowing about tomorrow.&#8217; At the same time, South Africa is growing increasingly anti-migrant. &#8216;Government has completely ignored the problem of migration, leading to conflicts between poor South Africans and even poorer migrants.&#8217; This was also Steffen&#8217;s key take away in his presentation to a room full of anti-xenophobic activists in Cape Town, where he presented some of his initial finding.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In May and June, Steffen Jensen carried out fieldwork in Cape Town in a squatter camp where he has worked many times before.
