From June 9th-13th, we had the pleasure of gathering the entire CONFINED team in Copenagen to get to know each other, and to align the projects.

Workshop highlights
We started the workshop with team introductions, where each case study was presented by the researchers. In addition to the four case studies already outlined, there is a 5th emerging case study across the Mediterranean, carried out by Ahlam Chemlali.
From here, we discussed overarching themes. Although the case studies all have different contexts, themes such as coercive legal regimes and (in)visibility occured in different framings in each case study.
Another key discussion was comparison, as outlined in the project’s 2nd Work Package. We agreed to work with the themes, and that we want to simplify the comparison rather than complicating it. One way this could happen is through comparing fewer cases, like comparing two case studies instead of all four. This will be decided organically, and planned as the possibilities are identified.
Public launch
We finished off the inception workshop by hosting a public launch. Here, our PhD fellows discussed researching confined lives, and we had a roundtable discussion on partnerships between the global north and south with CONFINED’s partner institutions (Lebanese American University, Mahidol University, and university of Cape Town).

Altogether, the week was an important step in getting to know each other as researchers and people, as well as planning the project’s next steps. CONFINED has officially launched!
